Barriers Of Implementation Of Immunonutrition On Postoperative Pancreatoduodenectomy (Whipple Procedure) Patients
Objectives: The Emerging Trends Research
Project will provide the intern an opportunity to address a need related to an
emerging trend in either clinical, community, or foodservice management
dietetics. The project will allow the intern to utilize the systems theory and
a process approach to identify a research need, develop and implement a
research design and method, analyze results and apply findings in dietetics
practice.
Competencies:
ETD (5.1) Evaluate emerging trends for application in dietetic practice
ETD (5.2) Conduct a needs assessment investigating environmental, social, economic, and clinical issues or application in dietetics practice
ETD (5.3) Develop business and operating plan incorporating innovative solutions related to emerging nutrition trends
ETD (5.4) Manage the integration of financial, human, physical and material resources in the development of programs and services
ETD (5.5) Demonstrate leadership through coordination in the development, marketing, implementation, and evaluation of a health and wellness initiative
ABSTRACT
The use of immunonutrition supplementation on GI surgery patients is scientifically proven to decrease infection rates in patients, decrease wound healing time, decrease length of stay in hospitals, and cut costs for patients as well hospitals. Even with scientific evidence backing the use/benefits of immunonutrition supplementation it is not standard practice for doctors to use these products yet. This study assessed the barriers to implementation of immunonutrition on postoperative pancreatoduodenectomy (whipple procedure) patients. The survey found that the main barriers doctor’s face when it comes to immunonutrition implementation is overall product knowledge and ease of ordering. From this study it can be inferred that doctors and patients may benefit from nutrition related education at hospitals for the staff/doctors. This creates a teaching opportunity for dietitians because it is the job of the registered dietitian to make sure the most current nutrition therapy is being used on patients.
